Chapter 25

Ronan

Rubbing his aching shoulder, Ronan twisted around to peer over at the copse of trees Clara was hiding in. A grim smile twisted his lips. He was proud of her for finding a decent place to camp, but the feeling was fleeting. He was the reason she was hiding in the trees instead of sitting next to him by his fire.

He had failed her.

His eyes drifted up the trees, searching for the tell-tale sign of smoke. Since following her closer to the city, he hadn’t seen or smelled any hint of a campfire besides his own, and today was no exception. Concern creased his brow as he dropped his gaze back down to the base of the trees. Squinting, he searched for any sign of movement.

Shifting again so he wasn’t twisting his injured shoulder so much, he peered even closer. A glint of silver caught the light and flashed across the field. His muscles relaxed as relief washed over him. She was still alive. She hadn’t frozen to death. But, gods, she had to be cold. Freezing, even.

Turning back around, he stared at his own campfire, contemplating his next move. The gate hadn’t opened like it should have shortly after the sun cleared the mountain peaks, which led him to believe that whoever was manning the gate only opened it when someone was waiting to be let in. That meant that if Clara actually wanted to get into the city, she had to leave her hidden campsite, something that Ronan knew she was loathe to do with him so close.

He couldn’t leave her, though.

He had said he would look after her, had promised to keep her safe, had sworn not to hurt her. And frankly, he had failed miserably at keeping those promises.

Even though Ronan knew that he had completely betrayed Clara’s trust and that she probably wouldn’t ever forgive him, he was determined to make things right. He’d start by making sure not to break those promises he had made. And that meant that he had to follow her into the city. They didn’t have to interact, of course, but he had to be close enough to keep an eye on her.

Ronan heaved a deep sigh. Clara was going to be livid when she realized that he was going to continue to follow her. He half wondered if she’d use his dagger on him again to get him to leave her alone. He smirked at the thought. She was growing quite feisty, and she had been a handful when he’d first met her. By the time she finally got comfortable in her own skin, she’d be a force of nature.

Ronan couldn’t wait.

Rubbing his shoulder again, he debated shifting to finish healing the rest of the way before heading into the city. He had a bit of time, and it wouldn’t take long. He sure as hell wasn’t about to pass through that gate without being at full strength. Something told him that showing even a hint of weakness would get him into trouble.
